How to Organize Supplemental Essay Prompts for Maximum Efficiency How to Organize Supplemental Essay Prompts for Maximum Efficiency How to Organize Supplemental Essay Prompts for Maximum Efficiency Let’s do a quick pulse check. Is your heart racing? Is your head spinning? Are you already drowning in an ocean of your own sweat? DON’T WORRY. We swear. It’s really not that bad. You just havent gotten organized yet! We’re here to introduce you to your friend, OVERLAP. Even outside of the Why Essay, Activity Essay, Oddball Essay and Community Essay, you are going to find a lot of overlap between your supplemental essay prompts. In order to tackle these essays as efficiently and effectively as possible, we suggest that before you brainstorm a single word, you collect every single supplement required of you and ORGANIZE. For example, it’s likely you have to write three separate why essays for three different schools. Which one is the longest? Start there. When you’re done can you edit the essay to suit the next school in line and cut the essay based on the shorter word count. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel. But, if you’re using the same essay as a base for various supplements, make sure you change out your references appropriately. There is nothing like a beautifully written essay that ends with “and that is why I belong at Vassar” to get the Bates admissions officer shaking her head and tossing you into the rejection pile. Once you finish attacking your Why Essays, round up your activity essays and again, tackle the longest one first. By the time you make your way to your community essays, oddballs and schools off the Common App, you will be warm and ready for your most creative brainstorming. Keep a running list of your ideas and again, gun for your longest remaining supplements early in the process. By the time you reach your final handful of oddball questions, you will likely have a stack of ideas to comb through (since you never throw anything out) and a ton of drafts to mine for fully polished content. Subjects from finished essays may even be usable if you simply look at them through a different lens. Maybe apply a metaphor or a mechanism? Though the work is hard, and she has to work with monsters in the bath house, she does as well as she can and finally saves her parents. Movies in general must have some elements to be successful. The main purpose of a movie is to make the audience interested. The audience is always looking for bizarre beyond their own lives, so a great movie is the movie that can amaze the audience by taking them to the world beyond their imagination. A great movie is also a movie that the audience will remember after watching it. To make the audience remember a movie, it must have something to think about. That is why a great movie must convey meaningful messages that will make the audience think about and stay in their hearts. Movie is a form of entertainment, so it is undoubtedly that a great movie must succeed in entertaining its audience. A great movie needs to make the audience feels ease in mind and happy after watching it instead of filling audience’s mind with sadness. That is the reason why a happy ending is mandatory. Spirited Away is a great movie with full of imagination. If the audience read a lot of fairy tales, they will feel they are at home while watching Spirited Away. A human is turned into animal because he did something wrong is a familiar motive in fairy tales. In the movie, Chihiro’s parents are turned into pigs because they ate the food without permission. Usually, kids are punished because of their bad behaviors in fairy tales, but this time, in Miyazaki’s movie, adults are punished instead of kids, and the savior is a girl. This is where the imagination of Hayao Miyazaki turns on. The viewers will see the spiritual appears on the screen under the eyes of a girl. Some gods look like animals, and there is a god looks like a blob with a red bowl on his head. The spirits and gods are not scary but very familiar. They look weird, and the viewer might see some of them somewhere in their dreams when they were kids. The bath house is used by gods and spirits, so the employees of the bath house can’t be human. The employees are talking animals. They are working for a cruel witch, who has very big head and body. All those things are somewhere in the viewers’ childhood memory, and Hayao Miyazaki brings them all up onto the screen. Spirited Away also conveys a meaningful message. It is the environmental message. Chihiro’s encounter with a river god early in her bath house career is a good evidence of this. In the movie, Yubaba senses the stink spirit. She immediately evacuates the bath house and then assigns Chihiro to be the stink spirit attendant. Though this is a very difficult job, Chihiro manages to get the stink spirit cleaned. While she is cleaning the stink spirit, she sees a thorn on the stink spirit. She pulls the thorn. It turns out that the thorn is the handle of a bicycle, and there are tons of garbage are coming out of the stink spirit. Astonishingly, the stink spirit is a river god, who is heavily dirtied by the pollution of his river. Later she discovers that Haku is the god of the Kohaku River, and Haku is the one who saved her life when she was a child. This makes the viewers think of the relationship between human and the nature. Human rely to the nature, but they are destroying the nature. This is a meaningful message that will make the audience think about the nature after watching Spirited Away. Spirited Away has a very beautiful ending. No Face is a lonely spirit. He travels place to place without purposes. Finally, he finds a home to stay. He stays with Zeniba to look after her. It is a beautiful ending for a lonely spirit. Chihiro finally saves her parents from Yubaba. She passes the test of Yubaba and breaks the spell. It is a happy ending that all the viewers expect. There is also a happy ending for Yubaba. Her son returns after a journey to Zeniba’s house, and he grows up more after the trip. Haku remembers his name is Kohaku, and he is the god of the Kohaku River. He is no longer under control of Yubaba. For Chihiro, she has grown into a better person for her experience in the spiritual world. Spirited Away is a great movie. Truly, Homer can not give her what she is looking for neither did her father. The need for companionship is the basis of courting Homer Barron. When the work finished and Homer left town, Miss Emily was once again alone. And the insanity began to set in. Even though her cousins stay with her for a short while, this is not what Emily wants. When Homer came back, her chance for everlasting companionship was available. So, she killed him to secure the fact that she will always have him by her side, and she will never be alone again. Blythe think that the most provocative aspect in the story is the motive in killing Homer Barron. And he suggested that homosexuality is the reason for Emily to poison him. Homer himself said that he only like men, and whether this means he is gay as his last name would imply, or he simply is just like to be around men, he will not settle down. Emily could not stand the thought of loosing another man; she wanted to save face, her pride, and loneliness (49-50). In the other hand, Wallace mentioned in one of his articles that he denied the knowing that Homer Barron is a gay, because he is wandering how the narrator know all of the details in the story. Beside that, he did not get to write about Emily until fifty years passed, which will make every thing he says is suspect. The narrator just wants to trap us (105-107). Miss Emily is a southern lady. She was raised to adhere to certain standards by stocking to the old south's rules. She locked herself in her house and refused to see any one but her servant. She represents the past south (a fallen monument). In the story we can see how Miss Emily tried her best to keep the southern tradition, she write on "note paper of an archaic shape" in "faded ink." After her father's death, she kept him for three days maybe because he was the only symbol of the south that left for her. She told the tax collectors to go and ask Colonel Sartoris to explain why she is exempt.

When the Recession of the Late 2000s Began and Ended

When the Recession of the Late 2000s Began and Ended The recession that began in the late 2000s was, to date, the worst economic downturn in the United States since the Great Depression. They didnt call it the Great Recession for nothing. So how long did the recession last? When did it begin? When did it end? How did the length of the recession compare to previous recessions? See more: Even in Recession, Congress Pay Grew Heres a brief Q and A on the recession. When did the Great Recession begin? December 2007, according to the National Bureau of Economic Research, a private, nonprofit research group. When did the Great Recession end? June 2009, though lingering effects such as high unemployment continued to plague the United States well beyond that date. In determining that a trough occurred in June 2009, the committee did not conclude that economic conditions since that month have been favorable or that the economy has returned to operating at normal capacity, the NBER reported in September 2010. Rather, the committee determined only that the recession ended and a recovery began in that month. And a slow recovery it would be. How does the committee define a recession and a recovery? A recession is a period of falling economic activity spread across the economy, lasting more than a few months, normally visible in real GDP, real income, employment, industrial production, and wholesale-retail sales, NBER said. The trough marks the end of the declining phase and the start of the rising phase of the business cycle. Economic activity is typically below normal in the early stages of an expansion, and it sometimes remains so well into the expansion. How does the length of the Great Recession compare to past downturns? The recession lasted 18 months, making it the longest of any recession since World War II, according to the committee. Previously the longest postwar recessions were those of 1973-75 and 1981-82, both of which lasted 16 months. When and for how long did the other modern recessions occur? The recession of 2001 lasted eight months, from March through November of that year. The recession of the early 1990s also lasted eight months, from July 1990 through March 1991. The recession of the early 1980s lasted 16 months, from July 1981 through November 1982. How did the government deal with the Great Recession? In order to deal with the nation’s worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, Congress passed legislation that increased discretionary government spending in order to stimulate the economy. This legislation created programs ranging from financial assistance to large banks and car manufacturers to direct tax rebates for low-income households. In addition, Congress funded a series of massive â€Å"shovel-ready† public works projects, such as highway construction and improvement. At its peak, in early 2009, total discretionary government spending reached about $1.2 trillion in annual terms, or 7% of the nation’s total Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In other words, ending the Great Recession required spending a lot of money the government simply had not planned to spend. How did the Great Recession affect taxpayers? Recessions, especially â€Å"Great† ones, can be costly affairs for taxpayers. According to the Federal Reserve Board, the Great Recession raised the U.S. federal debt and fiscal deficit to record peacetime levels. The federal debt increased from 62% of the GDP in 2007 before the recession to over 100% in 2013, five years after the supposed end of the recession. Indeed, the effects of the Great Depression of 2008 will linger for years to come. Updated by Robert Longley

World War II in the Pacific - New Guinea, Burma, China

World War II in the Pacific - New Guinea, Burma, China Previous: Japanese Advances Early Allied Victories World War II 101 Next: Island Hopping to Victory The Japanese Land in New Guinea In early 1942, following their occupation of Rabaul on New Britain, Japanese troops began landing on the north coast of New Guinea. Their objective was to secure the island and its capital, Port Moresby, in order to consolidate their position in the South Pacific and provide a springboard for attacking the Allies in Australia. That May, the Japanese prepared an invasion fleet with the goal of attacking Port Moresby directly. This was turned back by Allied naval forces at the Battle of the Coral Sea on May 4-8. With the naval approaches to Port Moresby closed, the Japanese focused on attacking overland. To accomplish this, they began landing troops along the islands northeast coast on July 21. Coming ashore at Buna, Gona, and Sanananda, Japanese forces began pressing inland and soon captured the airfield at Kokoda after heavy fighting. Battle for the Kokoda Trail The Japanese landings preempted Supreme Allied Commander, Southwest Pacific Area (SWPA) General Douglas MacArthurs plans for using New Guinea as a platform for attacking the Japanese at Rabaul. Instead, MacArthur built up his forces on New Guinea with the goal of expelling the Japanese. With the fall of Kokoda, the only way to supply Allied troops north of the Owen Stanley Mountains was over the single-file Kokoda Trail. Running from Port Moresby over the mountains to Kokoda, the trail was a treacherous path that was seen as an avenue of advance for both sides. Pushing his men forward, Major General Tomitaro Horii was able to slowly drive the Australian defenders back up the trail. Fighting in terrible conditions, both sides were plagued by disease and a lack of food. Upon reaching Ioribaiwa, the Japanese could see the lights of Port Moresby but were forced to halt due to a lack of supplies and reinforcements. With his supply situation desperate, Horii was ordered to withdraw back to Kokoda and the beachhead at Buna. This coupled with the repulse of Japanese attacks on the base at Milne Bay, ended the threat to Port Moresby. Allied Counterattacks on New Guinea Reinforced by the arrival fresh American and Australian troops, the Allies launched a counteroffensive in the wake of the Japanese retreat. Pushing over the mountains, Allied forces pursued the Japanese to their heavily defended coastal bases at Buna, Gona, and Sanananda. Beginning on November 16, Allied troops assaulted the Japanese positions and in bitter, close-quarters, fighting slowly overcame them. The final Japanese strongpoint at Sanananda fell on January 22, 1943. Conditions in the Japanese base were horrific as their supplies had run out and many had resorted to cannibalism. After successfully defending the airstrip at Wau in late January, the Allies scored a major victory at the Battle of the Bismarck Sea on March 2-4. Attacking Japanese troop transports, aircraft from SWPAs air forces managed to sink eight, killing over 5,000 soldiers that were en route to New Guinea. With momentum shifting, MacArthur planned a major offensive against the Japanese bases at Salamaua and Lae. This attack was to be part of Operation Cartwheel, an Allied strategy for isolating Rabaul. Moving forward in April 1943, Allied forces advanced towards Salamaua from Wau and were later supported by landings to the south at Nassau Bay in late June. While fighting continued around Salamaua, a second front was opened around Lae. Named Operation Postern, the attack on Lae began with airborne landings at Nadzab to the west and amphibious operations to the east. With the Allies threatening Lae, the Japanese abandoned Salamaua on September 11. After heavy fighting around the town, Lae fel l four days later. While fighting continued on New Guinea for the rest of the war, it became a secondary theater as SWPA shifted its attention to planning the invasion of the Philippines. The Early War in Southeast Asia Following the destruction of Allied naval forces at the Battle of the Java Sea in February 1942, the Japanese Fast Carrier Strike Force, under Admiral Chuichi Nagumo, raided into the Indian Ocean. Hitting targets on Ceylon, the Japanese sank the aging carrier HMS Hermes and forced the British to relocate their forward naval base in the Indian Ocean to Kilindini, Kenya. The Japanese also seized the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Ashore, Japanese troops began entering Burma in January 1942, to protect the flank of their operations in Malaya. Pushing north towards the port of Rangoon, the Japanese pushed aside British opposition and forced them to abandon the city on March 7. The Allies sought to stabilize their lines in the northern part of the country and Chinese troops rushed south to aid in the fight. This attempt failed and the Japanese advance continued, with the British retreating to Imphal, India and the Chinese falling back to the north. The loss of Burma severed the Burma Road by which Allied military aid had been reaching China. As a result, the Allies began flying supplies over the Himalayas to bases in China. Known as The Hump, the route saw over 7,000 tons of supplies cross it each month. Due to the hazardous conditions over the mountains, The Hump claimed 1,500 Allied aviators during the war. Previous: Japanese Advances Early Allied Victories World War II 101 Next: Island Hopping to Victory Previous: Japanese Advances Early Allied Victories World War II 101 Next: Island Hopping to Victory The Burmese Front Allied operations in Southeast Asia were perpetually hampered by a lack of supplies and the low priority given the theater by Allied commanders. In late 1942, the British launched their first offensive into Burma. Moving along the coast, it was quickly defeated by the Japanese. To the north, Major General Orde Wingate began a series of deep penetration raids designed to wreak havoc on the Japanese behind the lines. Known as Chindits, these columns were supplied entirely by air and, though they suffered heavy casualties, succeeded in keeping the Japanese on edge. Chindit raids continued throughout the war and in 1943, a similar American unit was formed under Brigadier General Frank Merrill. In August 1943, the Allies formed the Southeast Asia Command (SEAC) to handle operations in the region and named Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten as its commander. Seeking to regain the initiative, Mountbatten planned a series of amphibious landings as part of a new offensive, but had to cancel them when his landing craft were withdrawn for use in the Normandy invasion. In March 1944, the Japanese, led by Lieutenant-General Renya Mutaguchi, launched a major offensive to take the British base at Imphal. Surging forward they encircled the town, forcing General William Slim to shift forces north to rescue the situation. Over the next few months heavy fighting raged around Imphal and Kohima. Having suffered high numbers of casualties and unable to break the British defenses, the Japanese broke off the offensive and began retreating in July. While the Japanese focus was on Imphal, US and Chinese troops, directed by General Joseph Stilwell made progress in northern Burma. Retaking Burma With India defended, Mountbatten and Slim began offensive operations into Burma. With his forces weakened and lacking equipment, the new Japanese commander in Burma, General Hyotaro Kimura fell back to the Irrawaddy River in the central part of the country. Pushing on all fronts, Allied forces met with success as the Japanese began giving ground. Driving hard through central Burma, British forces liberated Meiktila and Mandalay, while US and Chinese forces linked up in the north. Due to a need to take Rangoon before the monsoon season washed away the overland supply routes, Slim turned south and fought through determined Japanese resistance to take the city on April 30, 1945. Retreating east, the Kimuras forces were hammered on July 17 when many attempted to cross the Sittang River. Attacked by the British, the Japanese suffered nearly 10,000 casualties. The fighting along the Sittang was the last of the campaign in Burma. The War in China Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Japanese launched a major offensive in China against the city of Changsha. Attacking with 120,000 men, Chiang Kai-Sheks Nationalist Army responded with 300,000 forcing the Japanese to withdrawal. In the wake of the failed offensive, the situation in China returned to the stalemate that had existed since 1940. To support the war effort in China, the Allies dispatched large amounts of Lend-Lease equipment and supplies over the Burma Road. Following the capture of the road by the Japanese, these supplies were flown in over The Hump. To ensure that China remained in the war, President Franklin Roosevelt dispatched General Joseph Stilwell to serve as Chiang Kai-Sheks chief of staff and as commander of the US China-Burma-India Theater. Chinas survival was of paramount concern for the Allies as the Chinese front tied down large numbers of Japanese troops, preventing them from being used elsewhere. Roosevelt also made the decision that US troops would not serve in large numbers in the Chinese theater, and that American involvement would be limited to air support and logistics. A largely political assignment, Stilwell soon became frustrated by the extreme corruption of Chiangs regime and his unwillingness to engage in offensive operations against the Japanese. This hesitancy was largely the result of Chiangs desire to reserve his forces for fighting Mao Zedongs Chinese Communists after the war. While Maos forces were nominally allied with Chiang during the war, they operated independently under Communist control. Issues Between Chiang, Stilwell, Chennault Stilwell also butted heads with Major General Claire Chennault, the former commander of the Flying Tigers, who now led the US Fourteenth Air Force. A friend of Chiangs, Chennault believed that the war could be won through air power alone. Wishing to conserve his infantry, Chiang became an active advocate of Chennaults approach. Stilwell countered Chennault by pointing out that large numbers of troops would still be required to defend US airbases. Operating parallel to Chennault was Operation Matterhorn, which called for the basing of new B-29 Superfortress bombers in China with the task of striking the Japanese home islands. In April 1944, the Japanese launched Operation Ichigo which opened a rail route from Beijing to Indochina and captured many of Chennaults ill-defended airbases. Due to the Japanese offensive and the difficulty in obtaining supplies over The Hump, the B-29s were re-based to the Marianas Islands in early 1945. Endgame in China Despite having been proven correct, in October 1944, Stilwell was recalled to the US at Chiangs request. He was replaced by Major General Albert Wedemeyer. With the Japanese position eroding, Chiang became more willing to resume offensive operations. Chinese forces first aided in evicting the Japanese from northern Burma, and then, led by General Sun Li-jen, attacked into Guangxi and southwestern China. With Burma retaken, supplies began to flow into China allowing Wedemeyer to consider larger operations. He soon planned Operation Carbonado for the summer of 1945, which called for an assault to take the port of Guandong. This plan was cancelled following the dropping of the atomic bombs and Japans surrender. Previous: Japanese Advances Early Allied Victories World War II 101 Next: Island Hopping to Victory

Financial Reporting in the Face of Accounting Scandals Essay

Financial Reporting in the Face of Accounting Scandals - Essay Example The job of financial reporting is to give an overview of the short and long term financial position of a company. This is done by producing the Balance sheet, which provides a picture of the company at a point in time, the Income Statement which gives an account of the business's performance during the year in terms of revenues and expenses, the Cash flow Statement which presents the cash inflows and outflows fro the company divided into operating, investing and financing activities and finally the statement of changes in equity which basically explains the change in a retained earnings of the company during the financial year (Graham 2005). These four statements are aided in understanding by notes to the financial statements which provide additional and in depth information about specific items mentioned in the four statements. Accurate and transparent financial reporting of a company's accounts is significantly important in this age of massive investments. The four statements listed above provide information to the investors in making important investment decisions and to lenders regarding credit decisions (Piotroski 2000). This is done based on the position of the company presented in the financial statements which allows investors to judge whether the company is profitable and whether they would be able to get a significant return on their investments with this company. Creditors similarly can judge the ability of the company to pay off its debt in the future and whether they will be able to receive their money back with the interest payments. These statements are also utilized for assessing the cash flow prospects of the company as well with the same purpose in mind, to benefit investors and creditors. Cash flow projections are very important for decision making as cash inflows and outflows are ultimat ely the most important things in terms of a company's ability to payoff investors and creditors. Without this liquidity, there would be little to payoff with (Kaplan 1995). Furthermore, financial reporting gives information about the ownership of assets of the company and its related liabilities which allows users of the statements to assess what the company holds and how it is performing in general. It is also an indicator of the management's performance during a fiscal year, allowing shareholders to judge whether the current crop of management and the Board of Directors is doing a good job handling their investment (Kaplan 1995). As such, the existing shareholders of the company need financial reporting to assess whether their investments are worthwhile. Prospective investors can utilize them to judge whether the company presents a better investment option compared to others in the industry and in general. The all important tax collections that government authorities perform are b ased on the financial statements of the companies which make them important for the Government (Watts 2003). Even the employees of the company, who are organized in the form of labor unions in many countries, use the financial statements to assess the company's performance and negotiate for compensation and promotion with the management. Financial analysts and those on the

Goodrich-Rabobank Interest Rate Swap Essay -- Economics Economy Essays

Goodrich-Rabobank Interest Rate Swap 1. How large should the discount (X) be to make this an attractive deal for Rabobank? 2. How large must the annual fee (F) be to make this an attractive deal for Morgan Guaranty? 3. How small must the combination of F and X be to make this an attractive deal for B.F. Goodrich? 4. Is this an attractive deal for the savings banks? 5. Is this a deal where everyone wins? If not, who loses? Introduction: Players: Morgan Bank, Rabobank, and B.F. Goodrich, Salomon Brothers, Thrift Institutions and Saving Banks Goodrich: In early 1983, Goodrich needed $50 million to fund its ongoing financial needs. However, Goodrich was reluctant to borrow (short term debt) from its committed bank lines because of the following reasons: 1. It would lose substantial about of its remaining short term capital availability under its bank lines. 2. It would compromise its future flexibility by borrowing in the short term. Instead, it wanted to borrow for an 8 year range (or longer) at a fixed rate. However, since the general level of interest rates were pretty high, and Goodrich?s credit ratings had dropped from BBB to BBB-. Goodrich believed that it would have to pay 13% interest for a 30 year corporate debenture. Salomon Brothers had advised Goodrich that they could borrow in the US public debt market with a floating rate debt issue tied to the LIBOR, and then swap payments with Euro market bank that had raised funds in the fixed-rate Eurobond market. Note: The reason that Salomon were confident that this could be done is described as follows: 1. There was a recent deregulation of deposit markets had allowed deposit institutions to offer n... ...% - (x1+11.2%) = 1.3%-x1. 7. From (2), and (5) Rabobank saves the following amount in semiannual interest payments: LIBOR ? 1/8% - (LIBOR ?x2) = x2 ? 1/8%. 8. For this deal to occur, Rabobank, Morgan, and Goodrich must profit hence the following also must be true: a. (x1-x2)>= F where 37.5> F> 8 (footnote #2 on page 362). b. 130 ? x1> 0 i.e. 130> x1 c. X2 ? 12.5> 0 i.e. x2> 12.5 Assuming that x2 = 20 basis, and x1 = 100 basis. We can conclude the following: Goodrich pays a fixed interest of 11.2% + 1% = 12.2% a savings of 20 basis points (after transaction costs). Rabobank saves a total of 2% - 1.8% = 20 basis points. And Morgan collects 2% - 1.25% = 75 basis points in fee, in addition to the $125,000 one time fee. Note: The total savings that this deal provides as a result of the swap is: 5 + 20 + 75 = 100 basis points.

Homelessness and Vagabond Essay

Vagabonds are normally despised by the society. What happens when they are treated like an ordinary respectable human being is the main theme of this story. Introduction: The vagabond who is often chased by people is welcomed by an old man. In spite of the good nature of the old man the vagabond robs him. He later returns the money due to the good deeds and kind nature of a young lady. Summary: The vagabond sold self made rattraps. He made the rattraps with wire which he got by begging in the stores or big farms. At times he used to beg and steal, he had a philosophy of his own the entire world was a sort of rattrap. People were lured by the various pleasures of life just as a rat is attracted by cheese or pork. One day he met an old man as he was seeking shelter for the night. He was given hot porridge, tobacco to smoke and they even played cards. The old man showed the vagabond his money pouch and the three ten kroner notes. He slept that at the old man’s house and the next day he left the house with the three notes. He wandered into the forest for fear being caught for his thievery. He lost his way and finally stumbled into Ramsjo Ironworks in search of warmth and shelter. The owner of the Ironworks mistakes him to be an old friend and took him home. The vagabond played along but later requested to go back to the warmth of the forge. The Ironmaster sent his daughter to bring him back. The gentle and kind nature of the young lady made him follow her. Once he cleaned and shaved, the Ironmaster realized that he was a stranger. He asked the vagabond to leave his house but his daughter wanted him to stay. He ate and slept the entire day. On Christmas Eve the Ironmaster and his daughter went to church. At the church they heard that a vagabond had stolen money from an old man who had worked as crofter at Ramsjo Ironworks. The young lady became very sad and the Ironmaster was sure that all his silver spoons would have disappeared. On their return the valet said that the vagabond had left and he did not take anything along with him. On the contrary he left a small gift for the young lady. The vagabond had returned the stolen money along with a rattrap as a gift to the young lady. He wrote a note thanking her for her kindness and asked her to return the money back to the old man. The money was like bait that drew him to it and he would have been like a rat who got caught in the trap called ‘love of money’. Conclusion: The author has very well brought the condition of the vagabond. It is important to treat them as human beings and maybe a little love and affection can work wonders in transforming them into honest and sociable people.

The Characteristics Of Jazz And Blues Langston Hughes s ...

The Characteristics of Jazz and Blues in Langston Hughes’s The Weary Blues While I was reading Langston Hughes’s poems, I have noticed his outstanding accomplishment in his blending creation of Negro musical characteristics and poetry. And The Weary Blues is his peaked piece of a combination of both jazz and blues. The poem reflected American African’s living situation during the Harlem Renaissance, it sufficiently revealed the cultural charm of Negros and Hughes’s fully affirms of his national dignity. In my paper, I will analyze the methods and techniques Hughes used to highlight the musical elements in this poem. Jazz and blues are both styles of music which were discovered by Negros. They are important to Hughes and his culture, and according to the sad and painful tunes in jazz and blues, Hughes wanted us to listen and understand his culture from this poem. The Weary Blues has a rather oral character style; the fundamental key is very slow and sentimental, but the poem is full of musicality, and makes readers felt if they are staying on the scene. I felt not only the special pleasing quality of Negro’s ballad, but also felt depressed from Negro’s circumstances during that time. So I have decided to focus on the analysis of the structural, style of language, along with the jazzy and blues’ characteristics in the image of theme. And apparently, I will use structuralism and a touch on linguistics as my criticisms to argue my statement. The Importance Of The American Dream - 1321 Words

Former First Lady, Michelle Obama, eloquently summarized the American Dream at the Democratic National Convention in 2012. â€Å"Barack knows the American Dream because hes lived it...and he wants everyone in this country to have that same opportunity, no matter who we are, or where were from, or what we look like, or who we love. Power Of Emotional Freedom Technique And The Universal...

To leverage the power of Emotional Freedom Technique and the Universal Laws of Creation, it is essential to know and to understand the basic principles that govern our Universe. The Universal Laws govern all of life without exception; from the glaciers to earthquakes, from spinning tops and spinning planets to newborns and world leaders, from elephants and arachnids to amoebas, to orchids, oranges and microorganisms. Metaphysics is the term used to study that which is beyond the physical, beyond what we can touch, see, taste and feel. The Universal Laws are the non-physical principles that govern our Universe in an unfailing, impartial, consistent and dependable fashion. As we study the laws that govern our Universe, we see certain empirical Truths. It is through the study of these Universal Principles and Truths that we master our creative abilities. With study, we begin to comprehend the profound implications of each law; we become more and more conscious of the power of our intentionality and of our minds; more and more conscious of the unwavering influence of our thoughts, emotions and beliefs on our experience. As we begin to work with these Universal Truths (studying, applying, practicing, and redirecting), we learn how it is that we live either in harmony or disharmony with our dreams and goals. By choosing to become acutely aware of our harmonious or disharmonious actions and thoughts, we experience and observe first hand the Universal Laws playing out inShow MoreRelatedThe Four Paths of Yoga1673 Words   |  7 Pageswork together for a greater purpose. Not all naturally occurring metals are used by the body for important biological processes. Lead and cadmium are examples of these metals that are not essential for life but may even cause toxicity and death if taken in large doses. A study conducted in Japan showed a correlation between protein intake with the increased vulnerability for intoxication of cadmium (Tavari 1986). We will write a custom essay sample on Lowprotein or any similar topic only for you Order Now Rats given a low protein diet were observed to have higher toxicity from these metals that were also detected in the urine and feces (Suzuki 1984).   A low protein diet in humans is usually advised to those with kidney and liver diseases and as a result, this negative effect of higher metal toxicity is important to understand. Metals act by binding to organic compounds subsequently altering their structure and possibly modifying their function. When the function in not carried out well, this can lead to cell death and inactivation of the production of important enzymes (â€Å"Metals as toxins†). For instance, a metal compound can compete with a biologically significant element such as oxygen to create an enzyme responsible for degrading glucose. If this metal successfully defeats oxygen, the enzyme may not be produced; thus, glucose will not be degraded and possibly accumulated. This is a simple example of what a metal can do to the body. In the case of normal protein intake, the body has enough proteins that can bind to harmful compounds such as metals. Similar to the action of a lock and key, a specific protein can complex with damaging bioelements and then excrete them outside the body to prevent possible internal damage. Metallothionein specifically works as a chelating agent and combines itself with cadmium, for example and is excreted out of the body while Selenium, a protein abundantly found in egg whites, suppresses the toxic effect of metals (â€Å"Metals as toxins†). A low protein intake thus, have a significant effect in resulting to high levels of cadmium and lead in the blood since most protein clearly function in sweeping out these harmful metals by binding with them and then carrying them out of the body. Developing the price policy for a Bike

Developing the price policy for a Bike Introduction Among the four P’s of marketing, pricing is probably among the most important. Its importance is best represented by the fact that pricing generates an organization’s turnover (Ranganathan 2001, p. 1). However, developing a sound pricing policy is not an easy process because pricing must reflect the supply and demand relationship of the product in question. Indeed, pricing a product too high or too low could lead to significant losses for the organization because it could put off customers or not match up to the market dynamics (Ferrell 2010).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Developing the price policy for a Bike specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More There is no shortfall to the number of companies which have made unsuccessful attempts at developing poor pricing policies. For example, the pricing policy adopted by Honda Civic was largely unsuccessful because the company realized significant loss es from its pricing strategy (Ferrell 2010). The company has since been trying to reinvent itself. This paper recognizes the pitfalls in developing a sound pricing policy and from this awareness; it seeks to develop a sound pricing policy for a bike. To achieve this objective, several factors will be considered. First, this paper analyzes the general conditions for the product. Specifically, the target market will be analyzed to expose the unique characteristics of the product (viz-a-viz the pricing policy). In addition, this paper highlights the different kinds of studies that ought to be undertaken before developing the final pricing policy. Alongside this goal will be identifying the objectives of the pricing strategy. It is only until these elements are effectively explained that the pricing strategy will be unveiled. To explain the criterion for developing the pricing policy, calculations will be given to show how the price of the product was arrived at. Finally, information ab out the long-term and short-term lower price limits will be given. General Conditions for the Product Already, we have established that this paper focuses on a bike as the chosen product for developing an effective pricing policy. The bike in focus will be a mountain bike which is specifically designed for hiking and other recreational activities. The product’s image will be designed to appeal to a young target market that is enthusiastic about technology and convenience. This perception is expected to be created from the product’s image which will be relied on to communicate a reliable piece of art which will withstand the most treacherous terrains. The product’s image will therefore be expected to communicate the message that the bike can be used in the rockiest and steepest terrains without being damaged. A range of colors and sizes will also be offered to appeal to different segments of the target market.Advertising Looking for essay on business eco nomics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Based on the functions of the bike, the target market will be comprised of people between the age of 12 and 30. This population group is perceived to have a higher inclination of engaging in recreational activities like mountaineering or hiking (Young 2011). However, the target market also includes other institutions that engage in the primary functions of the bike. For example, different organizations hire bicycles to different bike enthusiasts and similarly, different organizations provide their employees with bicycles during team recreational activities and other team-building activities. Indeed, organizations such as hotels, tour companies (and the likes) hire bicycles to tourists and other people who would want to explore nature (on bikes). Similarly, almost every organization today engages in team building activities as a way to motivate employees in their workplace (and improve employee cohesion). These target groups are amalgamated with individual customers to constitute a wider target group. Studies to be Undertaken before developing the Pricing Policy As observed in earlier sections of this paper, pricing policies are very crucial to the success of a product. Developing effective pricing policies is perceived by many people as a gruesome process that needs to take into account different dynamics of a company’s product and market (Young 2011). Different aspects of the company’s goals (and the market) therefore need to be considered in critical detail. Therefore, the first study that needs to be done before an effective price policy is introduced involves the determination of the company’s pricing goals. These goals may vary among organizations but they may include realizing short-term or long-term profits or even stabilizing the prices of the company’s products (Kardes 2004). Other companies may have different goals such as im proving their profitability or effectively managing the competitive pressure from other products. Paul (2008) explains that even when undertaking such a study, it is important for experts to factor the current market conditions because the pricing policies need to be conducive to the current market conditions. The study of the current market conditions therefore constitutes the second base to be covered in the formulation of an effective pricing policy. The third study that needs to be undertaken is the determination of the current competitive environment. Competition is a crucial component in the process of formulating pricing policies because aggressive competitive forces are known to erode the strengths of effective pricing policies (Kardes 2004).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Developing the price policy for a Bike specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Similarly, a weak competitive environment can revamp a weak pric ing policy. The final pricing policy therefore needs to be cognizant of the current competitive environment and preferably, the pricing level needs to be lower than the competitors’ (Encyclopedia of Management 2006, p. 7). The fourth study that needs to be done involves the ascertainment of production costs. In layman’s terms, this is the final cost of production. However, when undertaking the study, it is important to consider different aspects of production costs (including intangible costs). These costs normally vary among different companies but regarding the production of the mountain bikes, the most notable costs will be labor costs, material costs, transportation costs and assembly costs. These costs mainly describe the primary costs associated with the production or manufacture of the mountain bikes. Secondary costs associated with the production of the mountain bikes include administrative costs, inflation costs (among others). The study is therefore aimed at ascertaining all these costs to arrive at a profitable price that will be able to cover all the production costs and still allow the company to make a profit. The final study that needs to be done centers on the customers’ market power. This study is closely linked to the market survey. However, its uniqueness lies in focusing on the customers as opposed to other market forces. Indeed, markets are often segmented, based on different market parameters such as income levels, consumer tastes, preferences (and the likes). The process of pricing formulation therefore needs to take into account the customer dynamics of the market because it would be fruitless if a high-end pricing policy is implemented on a low-end market segment (Encyclopedia of Management 2006, p. 8). Objectives of the Pricing strategy As explained in earlier section of this paper, it is crucial for a company to establish what it intends to achieve from its pricing policy. Regarding the context of this paper, the main aim of the pricing strategy will be to achieve significant success during the introduction of the company’s product (mountain bikes). This objective is informed by the fact that there is a lot of competitive pressure in the mountain bike market segment and every company intends to have a significant share of the existing market. In fact, companies which are already active in the market intend to increase their market share and edge out weak products. The pricing strategy identified in this paper will therefore be aimed at addressing the above concerns.Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Calculation of the Price HERKULES (2011) explains that there are different methodologies that can be used to ascertain a product’s price. Mainly, he identifies three methodologies including cost-based pricing, competition-based pricing and customer-based pricing (HERKULES 2011, p. 11). Based on the objectives of our pricing strategy, this paper will use the competition-based pricing model. The main advantage of the competition-based pricing model is the keen focus on the industry’s dynamics (competitive activities and company activities). Indeed, by knowing competitor activities, it is very easy to develop an effective and competitive pricing strategy. Existing and emerging competition will also be keenly analyzed in this pricing strategy including how to increase the prices by providing additional value (that the competitors do not offer). The pricing strategy discussed below is aimed at designing the pricing policy so that it can effectively increase the customer bas e. The Government of Alberta (2012) describes this pricing strategy as a market penetration strategy. Nonetheless, this pricing strategy will be aimed at attracting customers from the competition and creating a new market share. Bowie (2012) explains that most companies which adopt this market strategy tend to lower their prices so that they seem more pocket-friendly to the customers. In vibrant markets, such market strategies are expected to yield a high profit in the short-term because customers in such markets tend to be very flexible and responsive to price changes. In detail, the cost of buying all the accessories for building the bike is expected to cost 40 Euros. This is the primary cost associated with buying and delivering all the components used to assemble the bicycle. Assembly costs are expected to add an additional 5 Euros to the cost of the bicycle. Therefore, the completed bicycle will cost 45 Euros. All other costs associated with marketing and delivery of the bicycl es to the final buyer is also expected to add an additional 5 Euros. Therefore the selling price for the bicycle is expected to be 50 Euros. From the study undertaken to assess the prices of the competition, we realized that the competitive prices in the market ranged between 45 Euros and 55 Euros. This price range appeals to all market segments. Considering the competitive prices, our pricing strategy intends to include 5 Euros to the existing cost of selling the bike as a component of the ‘value addition’ strategy. The value addition cost is directly attributed to after-sale services which are expected to be offered for all the bicycles sold. All customers will therefore be entitled to a free after-sale service for all bicycles bought (within the first year of purchase). All repair costs incurred after the one year period will therefore be done at the customer’s expense. This value addition cost is expected to be the selling point for this price policy. Concise ly, the free after-sale service justifies the additional 5 Euros added to the cost of the bicycle. Furthermore, the customer’s cannot compare the additional five Euros they will pay (as additional cost) with the cost of undertaking repairs (from their pockets). Justifiably, this pricing policy is therefore expected to work and draw in many customers from the competition. The market survey also shows that few competitors offer after-sale services. Finally, including the profit margin will add another 5 Euros to the cost of the bicycle. Correctly, the final price of the bike will be 60 Euros. The calculations are as follows: Cost of inputs 40 Euros Assembly costs 5 Euros Transportation and marketing costs 5 Euros After sale service cost 5 Euros Profit 5 Euros Total 60 Euros Other companies have used the above pricing strategy with tremendous success. Perhaps the most notable company to adopt this pricing strategy is Apple Inc. (Rosenbloom 2011, p. 337). Compared to its competitor’s prices, Apple’s prices are perceived to be abnormally high. However, the company has witnessed a consistent growth in its sales. In fact, the company’s former CEO, Steve Jobs, is globally celebrated to have steered the company to new heights of success (Rosenbloom 2011, p. 337). Ironically, the company’s prices are still high. Kunz (2010) analyzes this phenomenon and concludes that Apple’s success thrives on a pricing game. He further explains that the company prices its products high enough for the customers to believe that they have a good product (of high quality). His argument is that consumers are very poor at evaluating products and they do not know which criterion to use to establish whether they have a quality product or not (Kunz 2010). Since they have this dilemma, they blindly use the pricing strategy to determine whether they have a good product or not. The common belief among customers therefore is that a good qual ity product should be expensive. According to Kunz (2010) this perception has created the belief that Apple’s products are superior to their competitors. This paper therefore proposes the high-end pricing strategy as a basis for its future success. This pricing policy is closely similar to Apple’s, except for the fact that there is a good value creation attached to it. Obviously, the customers would see that the bikes are priced slightly higher than the competitors but the fact that they would get more value for paying a premium is expected to be the main selling point for this pricing policy. Long-term and the Short-term Lower Price Limits Potter (2004) explains that when formulating a pricing policy, it is important to consider the long-term and short-term implications of the pricing policy. There are different pricing strategies identified in this study but research shows that identifying the right pricing strategy is often a tricky affair (Besanko 2009). This paper has already cited the fact that a poor pricing strategy can potentially be disastrous for a business. Many markets have however witnessed the intrigues of lower price limits as a strategy adopted by some companies (especially) as they try to increase their market share (Besanko 2009). Lower price limits are sometimes perceived to be illegal in some countries because some manufacturers do not play fair by setting their lower price limits below the cost of production (McGuigan 2010). Often, this strategy is adopted by businesses that intend to limit the threat to entry. Therefore, when new businesses intend to enter such markets, they have to price their products at ridiculously low prices. Such prices are often unviable in the long-term. Focusing on the context of this study, we can agree that the lower price limit for the bike would include all the costs of production (without after sale services costs or any profit margins). From the calculations cited above, the lower price limit would be 50 Euros. This price is derived by adding the cost of inputs, assembly costs and transportation and marketing costs. However, since businesses have to analyze their sustainability, the low price limits have a strong business implication in the long-term and short-term. In the short-term, it would be obviously impossible to make a profit because selling the bikes at 50 Euros would imply that only the initial costs of production will be recovered. In the market, such a pricing strategy would increase sales and consequently increase the market share (McGuigan 2010). However, only the customers would be benefitting from the low price limit but the business would be suffering. The product will also gain popularity through such a business strategy because the sales volumes are expected to be high (since customers will be attracted by the low prices) (McDonald 2011). Such a situation is however likely to pose a problem for the viability of the business in the long-term. Indeed, i n the long-term, the business will not be able to make any profits. The business will also not be able to grow because there will be no profits to invest back into the business (Smagalla 2004, p. 9). Essentially, there would be no point of staying in the market longer because there will be no point of doing business because the whole notion of doing business is to make a profit. The low price limit does not allow for profit making and therefore the business will have to shut-down eventually (Boone 2011, p. 662). Ideally, it would be advisable to price the bikes at a few Euros more than the low price limit so that the business can make a profit and consequently grow. Depending on the competitive prices, the business will be able to grow and probably improve its service provision or venture into new markets. Such an eventuality is however impossible in the short-term. Only until the business is able to make a profit (for a prolonged period of time) can it be able to grow and possibly venture into new markets (Meyvis 2004). Conclusion After weighing the findings of this paper, we can agree that establishing the right pricing strategy for a new product is often tricky. Indeed, many companies have posted losses because of poor price policies while others have closed down from the same. Different factors have been explained as crucial to the formulation of the pricing policy. Specifically, competitor analysis, market analysis, cost analysis and customer analysis have been cited to be crucial to the formulation of pricing policies. This paper proposes an ambitious price policy which is based on a high-end pricing strategy aimed at delivering quality services for less money (from a long-term perspective). The preferred product is therefore expected to be sold slightly more expensive than the competitors but still, the price is not very far from the competitors’. A sustainable level of success is therefore expected. References Besanko, D 2009, Economics of Strat egy, John Wiley Sons, London. Boone, L 2011, Contemporary Marketing, Cengage Learning, London.
